Casper Classic 1993 - Final Results and Daily Results

I participated in the Casper Classic road cycling stage race in 1993 in Category 4.  I had just graduated college from U.C. Santa Barbara where I raced in Category C.  The race was a 7-day stage race with 2 criteriums, 1 time trial, and 4 road races.

This weekend I found all my old memorabilia from the race.  Since this was shortly before the World Wide Web took off, none of this was posted on the Internet.  Each day's stage and GC results were posted in the lobby of a hotel where we all went to check them out each day and were also posted in the local paper.  I searched the Internet this weekend for any old material or results that may have been posted online since.  I didn't find much except for a good article on Michael Wagner's blog referring to the 1990 and 1991 years.  So I decided to post what I had for 1993.

I'm sorry I'm not going to type out all the text, so if you're interested, you'll have to open the PDFs below.  I also have the "Race Bible" with course maps which I have not scanned yet.  I may post that at some point too.

Steep and long hills in Kansas City area

I've been looking for hills to walk up (and down) in the Kansas City area.  Of course, most of Kansas City is pretty flat, and most of Kansas and Missouri are too for that matter.  I've been on some hiking and mountain biking trails that have some long gradual slope to them, but I'm really looking for something steeper.  I live in Olathe, KS, and there are actually some pretty decent hills in my neighborhood, but they are shorter than I was looking for.  I decided my definition for "long and steep" here is at least 0.3 miles and grade of at least 4%.

I finally realized that the best place to look for hill routes is on the Strava web site.  Strava is an application for mobile phones that lets you track your workout.  Another app along the same lines is MapMyRide.  I don't know as much about MapMyRide, but Strava lets people record "segments" that are significant for one reason or another.  It could be a whole trail or route, or just one hill, or one long flat spot.  And the great thing I just found is that on the Strava web site, you can "Search" and "Explore" segments, and Strava will tell you their distance, elevation gain, and average grade (although it seems several are not true, maybe people's GPS went bonkers).

So anyway, here are some steep hills in Kansas City area, in no particular order.  The ones I've listed are mostly in Johnson County, because that's where I live and know where to search, but I also think its hillier here than Jackson County.  Some of these I've tried and some I haven't.  If you know any other good ones, please let me know!

Lenexa, KS

(THESE FIRST 4 ARE ALL RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER, SO YOU CAN MAKE ONE HILLY WALK OUT OF THEM. THE FIRST THREE ARE THE ONES I'VE BEEN DOING A LOT)
1. Woodland Rd and Falcon Ridge Dr. -  0.5 miles, 157 ft. altitude (5.9%)  There is actually a sign at the top that says it is an 8% grade.  But that must be just the steepest part.

2. 91st from Woodland to Falcon Ridge Dr. - 0.3 miles, 140 ft. altitude (7%).  The segment calls it "Hamilton Hollow"

3. Lake Lenexa Trail to 91st and Falcon Ridge Dr. - 0.4 miles, 114 ft. altitude (5.4%)  This is the other side of Hamilton Hollow, above

4. 87th Lane from creek to 87th St. - 0.4 miles, 121 ft (5.5%)

Olathe, KS

1. Olathe KS Waterfall Hill, 119th and Clare Rd - 0.5 miles, 147 ft. altitude (5.5%).  And you have the nice scenery of the waterfall when its running in the warm months.

2. Olathe KS Cedar Creek Hill -  0.4 miles, 96 ft. altitude (4%). I haven't tried this one yet.  A little shorter and less steep than others, but there is a shorter segment of it that has a 6.6% grade

Kansas City, KS

1. Lots of Cat 4 Climbs! - Wow, Kansas City KS may have the best hills around!  I haven't tried any of these yet, and too many to list separate, but they look legitimate.

2. Rosedale Dr., Stinson to Shearer - 0.4 miles, 134 ft. altitude (5%) Looks interesting, on other side of Rosedale Park, and I know that park is a bit hilly.

3. Cambridge St. off of SW Blvd - Technically, this doesn't meet my "long" requirement since it is only .15 miles, according to Strava.  But I'm adding anyway since it is very steep (14%) and a couple people mentioned it in the comments.

Shawnee, KS

Never tried either of these
1.  Shawnee Mission Park, Dam to Tower - 0.5 miles, 133 ft. altitude (4.9%)

2. Lawrence Rd., Midland Rd to Lind Rd. . - 0.7 miles, 191 ft altitude (4.6%)

Kansas City, MO

1. Kessler South from Pershing - 0.4 miles, 165 ft. altitude (5.8%) This goes up to the Liberty Memorial

2. Hospital Hill, Gillham from 22nd to 26th -  0.5 miles, 137 ft altitude (4.9%).  This is on the Hospital Hill 1/2 Marathon route.

3. Belleview to Observation Park - 0.4 miles, 173 ft altitude (7.8%).  Steepest on this list!

Blue Summit, MO

(These may technically be KCMO, but they're pretty close to the stadiums. They start right next to each other, so could be easily combined)
1. Emanuel Cleaver, 31st to 35th - 0.4 miles, 125 ft altitude (5.2%)

2. 31st, Van Brunt Blvd to Kensington - 0.6 miles, 158 ft. altitude, (4.0%)

Gladstone, MO

1. Waldron Drive - 0.6 miles, 217ft. (6%) -  Haven't tried this.  Not sure its Gladstone, but out by airport

Photo-opoly template - Printing photos for Photo-opoly

My wife bought a customizable board game called Photo-opoly many years ago.  Its been stored away, but we finally uncovered it and decided we wanted to give it as a gift to our niece.  Since our niece is only about 7 years old, we wanted to print out all the pictures for her.

When we opened the game to see what size pictures were needed, we found that they were an odd size, 1.25" by 1.5".  My wife suggested that I resize each picture and print them one-by-one, which sounded horrible since there are about 22 pictures needed.  Luckily (I thought) there was a card in the box that described a process for printing the pictures.

The recommended process was to go to the Ritz Camera web site, upload your photos, then choose the "PHOTO-OPOLY" template to print them.  I tried that but saw no mention of the template after uploading some pictures.  I called their customer service.  The representative told me that the template was no longer offered, but that I was the second person who had recently asked about that.  Since it sounds like other people are having the same problem, I thought I'd post my solution.

I opened up my own photo library software, Picasa, which can be downloaded for free from Google.  At first I opened the folder with my photos in it and just tried going to the "Print..." menu.  It only printed standard sizes, and the smallest was wallet size, 2.5" x 3.5".  But after playing around a little more, I found the option to print a contact sheet, which printed all my 36 pictures on one page at 1" x 1.25" each.  Looks like a full contact sheet can print 6 rows of 7 pictures, so 42 total.  The size was slightly smaller than what I thought I wanted, but the spaces to place the photos actually include a 3/16" white border, so the smaller photos just end up having some of the white border around them, which works just fine.

So to summarize, here are the steps:

  1. Download Picasa, if you don't already have it.
  2. Open Picasa
  3. Browse to your folder that contains all of your photos
  4. Go to the Folder menu and choose "Print Contact Sheet....".  That opens a Print Preview of the sheet
  5. From there, you can click a "Printer Setup" button to check your printer settings.  I made sure mine was on best quality, and set the paper type to Photo Paper.
  6. Print the photos
I hope that works for other people!  Merry Christmas!

Round Robin scenarios for 3 players or 4 players (or teams)

This interesting discussion came up at our backgammon club last night.  Normally, when we have a tournament, we award the winner with club points equal to the number of players who attend.  The next runner(s) up get half those points, the next gets half again, etc.  Any player with a win gets some points and players with no wins get 0 points.  This works well when we use a double elimination bracket, which we do when we have 5 or more players.

Its common though towards the end of the year that we have less players, so lately we have had a few nights of 3 or 4 players.  On those nights, we do a round robin style tournament where each person plays each person once.  The end result can have several ties and so its less clear how to award points.  So finally, I documented each scenario and how many points we will award.  Of course this can be applied to round robins in any sport with 3 or 4 teams, or other games.

3 PLAYER RESULTS
--------------------
2-0, 1-1, 0-2 : 3 points, 1.5 points, 0 points (4.5 total)
1-1, 1-1, 1-1 : 1.5 points each (4.5 total)

4 PLAYER RESULTS
--------------------
3-0, 2-1, 1-2, 0-3: 4 points, 2 points, 1 point, 0 points (7 total)
3-0, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2: No head-to-head tiebreakers, 4 points winner, 1 point for each 1-2 player (7 total)
2-1, 2-1, 2-1, 0-3: No head-to-head tiebreakers, 2.5 points for each 2-1 player (7.5 total)
2-1, 2-1, 1-2, 1-2: For each of the ties, there will be a head-to-head tiebreaker, so clear 1st through 4th placings can be determined. 4 points, 2 points, 1 point, 0.5 points (since 4th place had a win) (7.5 total)

The goal is to try to award close to the same number of total points in each case that has the same number of players.  In a 3 player round robin with no ties, the points are 3 for winner, 1.5 for second, 0 for third because that person has no wins.  That's 4.5 total points. So when 3 players have a 3-way tie, each gets 1.5 points so that the total is again 4.5.  That works out perfectly but 4 players is a little trickier.

In a 4 player round robin with no ties, winner gets 4, second gets 2, third gets 1, fourth gets 0 (no wins).  That's 7 points total.  If we were to use a double elimination bracket for 4 players, which we do sometimes if we want to finish faster, then we end with a tie for 2nd.  We don't make the winner of the consolation bracket play the loser of the main bracket, for the sake of time.  In that case, we award 4 for winner, 2 each to the two players with 1 loss each, and 0 to the person with no wins.  That's a total of 8 points.  So the goal for the 4 player round robins where there are ties is to award either 7 points total or 8 points total, or somewhere in between.

Digital picture frame file systems - FAT or NTFS on SD card

Wow, it took me a lot longer to load some pictures on some digital photo frames than it should have.  We have two digital photo frames - one that someone gave us and one that we just bought.  The one someone gave us is a few (??) years old.  It had a 2 GB SD card in it with 172 photos.  I just wanted to add 100 photos and be done.  No problem!

Turns out I could only add about 20 more before I got an error: "The root of drive F:\ is formatted with FAT file system and can only store a limited number of items, store in a sub-folder or reformat the drive using NTFS file system ".  After doing some reading online, only the oldest FAT format has this limitation, but FAT32 does not.  And since I wasn't positive that the frame supported NTFS.  I decided to format the SD card as FAT32 (after backing up all the files of course).

I formatted the SD card as FAT32, was able to add back all 272 files, and view them all on the older frame.  That was great, but I wanted to see how much better they would look on the new frame.  So I took the SD card out of the old frame and put it in the new frame.  Hmmmm..... the new frame is not recognizing the SD card. Well, since the frame is new and FAT is an old file system format, I figured maybe I need to format the card as NTFS for the new frame.

Now I formatted the SD card as NTFS and added back all 272 pictures a second time.  Put it back in the new frame....still not recognized.  I pressed every button on the thing trying to get it to read from the SD card instead of internal memory.  No luck.  It was reading pics from internal memory just fine though.  So I figure at least I can copy them to internal memory and it will work.

I copy all 272 files (third time) to the internal memory of the frame.  Now the new frame is showing the photos and looks great.  My wife tells me that someone else she knew had the same problem with an older memory card.  Sounds like the new frames don't recognize old SD cards, no matter what their file system is.

Since the new frame can't use the SD card, I figure I might as well put the card back with the old frame.  Oh, guess what?  Now the SD card is formatted as NTFS and the old frame doesn't recognize it.  So I reformat the SD card (third formatting) back to FAT32 and copy the 272 files (fourth copying) back to the card, put it into the old frame, and now we have two frames showing the same 272 pictures.   Hooray!

Get in line with text messages at Olathe DMV

DMV's always get a bad rap.  I had a great experience at the Olathe DMV today, so thought I should give them some credit.  They use a system that allows you to start getting in line before you're even there by sending them a text message.  It puts you in line and tells you your estimated wait time.  That way you can schedule it to show up right before you're up, so its almost like having an appointment.

I had to go get a license today, so I used the system.  Turns out they didn't even have a wait anyway!  First I got in line and it said I was up in 10 minutes.  I wasn't planning to be there for half an hour or more, so I cancelled that one.  When I was ready to leave, there was only a 1 minute wait!  Another nice feature is if your turn comes up and you're not there, you can still push yourself to the front of the line if you show up anytime in the next 30 minutes.  So that's what I did when I got there, even though the line was only one person long.

The system is developed by QLess.  Here's a text message transcript of my texts this morning.  You start the queueing process by texting them "Olathe DL"

Landlord check list for renting house

When my wife and I got married, we each owned a house.  We moved into one and started renting the other.  Eventually we moved to another house and started renting both of our original ones.  Now that we have rented them out a few times, I wanted to make myself a check list for doing it again.  Decided to post it online in case its helpful to others.  Here are the main steps that we take.

1) Advertise house on Craigslist with rent, square footage, pictures  deposit required. We don't allow pets, so we emphasize that too.

2) Clean house.  Identify anything that needs fixing and schedule repairs.

3) Show to people for about 1 week.  We've averaged about 6 parties looking at it.  We try to pick some week night or weekend to show to as many as we can so we can save some trips.  Ask people about when they would plan to move in. (UPDATE: on our 4th time renting, the house became vacant in early December. There was virtually no interest from anyone to see it until January, then it still took us another month to get an interested party)

4) After showing to several parties, pick the one party that seems the best of those that still want to move in.  We sometimes have 2 or more parties who want to move in after they look at it, sometimes just one.

5) Ask the people you chose to fill out applications, one per adult.  Email them application and document about credit rights. Tell any people that you didn't choose that you're going forward with someone else but will call them back if the first choice doesn't work out (which has happened twice).  NOTE: applicants should not send their SSN by email, for security reasons.  If they are scanning and emailing the application, then have them tell you SSN over the phone instead of writing on application.

6) For each adult applicant, do: credit check, employment verification with employer, residence verification and referral with current and past landlord.  All of that should be on application.  For credit check, must have SSN, DOB, and signature giving approval so those also need to be on application.  We also do background checks because my wife is a private investigator, but those can be expensive otherwise.  If you do that, then you should  get permission for that too.  We charge $20 per application to pay for credit checks, but only if we pick them to move in.

7) If you want to accept them after that, then let them know right away.  Get deposit and have them sign lease soon if move-in date isn't for a while.  Otherwise, get deposit, application fees, and pro-rated rent and sign lease at walk through time right before move in.  Set time to meet for walk through and transferring keys.

8)  Create lease agreement and send to tenant for review, along with EPA Lead pamphlet (only for old houses).

9) Send tenant phone numbers to change utilities into their name and explaining trash procedure.

10) Make sure you have enough keys for them.  Bring keys, garage door openers, camera, lease, and walk through check list to final walk through.

11) At walk through, review condition and any special instructions for each room.  Take broad pictures to document general condition of each room.  Takes 20-30 minutes.  Go through lease together explaining every item, 20-30 minutes.

12) Sign lease, get check for deposit, pro-rated rent, and application fees. Give keys.

There are lots of templates for applications and lease agreements, so find the ones that you like best.  In my opinion on the lease agreement, the more detailed the better to minimize misunderstandings or disagreements on responsibilities.

UPDATE: Regarding signing lease on move-in, we had a case recently where we had 3 people who said they wanted to move in, then we ran the applications for them, then they changed their minds.  So we spent $50 on application fees for nothing and had the property unlisted a few days.  That made us think we should get a signed lease and deposit earlier.  Or rather than signing the lease up front, maybe get the deposit and have a separate paper that says deposit will be forfeited if applicants back out.
